pages 31-32

Here's 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, for which my affectionate working title is "Counting's Fun". I don't know when or why this occurred to me. Likely the result of walking down the street desperately trying to think of song ideas. Writing the album, in the initial stages, brought on a lot of test anxiety: I know I can do this, but the longer I spend frantically doing doing doing, the less I'm able to concentrate and work. This song is revealing of the sort of weird desperation that can result. Counting? Really? That's the song? That's your idea of songwriting?

I didn't do a demo of this song early in the month, so when it was close to the end of February and deadline-panic had set in, I recorded the vocals for this in a caffeinated first-take fervor. There's a lot of variation in what I say for each line on the album through each of the verses, but this is a pretty good outline.

I regret not using "numeracy" on the album, but that would have been hard to spit out. I also regret without qualification, looking at the notebook now, not having ever said "count our asses straight to heaven" in those exact words on the recording, because, shit, that's a great line.
